Petition: Stop new laws to restrict speech

Justice Minister Andrew Little has confirmed the Government is fast-tracking a review of our speech laws, with an eye to broadening the types of speech that could be restricted as "hate speech".

"We call on all Members of Parliament to remember that free speech is the defining right of free people, because power to decide what is offensive or hateful will be used against speech disagreeable to people in power. Our existing laws against inciting violence would be sufficient if enforced. We ask Parliament to defend and strengthen the longstanding inherited freedoms of New Zealanders."
